Graffiti: Vandalism or Art?

When I take a walk around the streets of New Hamburg on a dark night, I like to go in the direction that takes me to a bridge. Not just any ordinary bridge, but the one that I always count on to be decorated with tags and pictures I know all too well. There is a very talented group of young men whos tags I see all over town. I find the best ones are always under the bridge.

It all depends on what a person graffitis to determine if it is vandalism or art. When I see "f**c the police" it is clearly not what I would classify as art. It is there to be vandalism, not to get people to stop and stare for a couple of minutes.

The graffiti artists in New Hamburg spend time and effort into the pictures and tags they spray onto the concrete under the bridge. This is art, it doesn't diss or offend anyone. People like to stop for a second and bask in the awesomeness of the art on the walls, even if it may not be legal.

Just because it isnt legal does not take away from the fact that it can be beautiful, awesome or just plain cool looking.

What Do I Think?

I like this course a lot. The projects are mostly interesting and creative and I like how our wonderful teacher, Miss Feick, explains in full detail what is expected. I think my biggest problem, not only in this class but others as well, is that I find homework to be a problem with my lack of spare time having a job and needy family members. I try to do my best to get things done but I can never seem to get things in to the teacher any time near the due date. Due dates are my #1 enemy, but I understand that everything must have a due date or there is no point to the project at all. Nobody would do them! Well I suppose I can't speak for everyone, but I can't think of many people who would do a project voluntarily and in the name of knowledge.

I love this whole blogging thing. I've never really done anything like it and I think it is very interesting. I think we do just the right amount of blogging and wouldn't change a thing about it.

The unit I am looking forward to the most is probably the travel writing unit. When I save enough money for school I would like to get into some sort of photo travel journalism and I'm hoping that unit will give me some idea of what it will be like, minus the photography part of it. I also think play writing will be very interesting and fun!

Overall, I like this class, and I think to make it any better is all on me. I need to do my homework and become more involved in projects and assignments. Maybe an earlier bedtime would do me some good! :)
